If we cast our minds back to 2017, Skybound and Universal Pictures announced a big-budget, live-action adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s beloved superhero comic Invincible. However, fast forward to today, and the project hasn’t taken off. Is it still happening?
The short answer is yes, the Invincible movie is still happening. The huge delay comes down to a number of reasons. Most notably, the recent success of Prime Video’s animated adaptation of Invincible — which is currently entering its third season — has meant it’s taken priority. Creator Robert Kirkman is hard at work with the Prime Video team at covering the entire story. Kirkman has previously hinted that in order to cover the entirety of the comics from beginning to end could take upwards of 8 seasons.
The movie has a lot of talent behind it, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg reportedly involved. Kirkman himself is also helping bring it to the big screen.
The confirmation that the Invincible movie is still happening comes from Kirkman himself. During a roundtable attended by The Direct, he confirmed that things are still progressing nicely. “It’s still in development,” he said. “We’re still working with Universal. You know, the show is going so well. I think the movie absolutely has to be perfect. And so it’s taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and getting everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be.”
It sounds like the notion of adapting the comics for the big screen is proving a tough nut to crack. In the TV show, the writers have plenty of time to play around with. However, movies have a much more limited screen time:
“So it’s been in development for a long time, and it’s probably going to be in development for a while longer. Just because, in relation to the show, it has to provide a different experience, it has to still be true to ‘Invincible’ in some interesting ways. But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own. And so that’s something we’re spending a lot of time crafting. But I think when it finally happens, it’s gonna be really cool. I think it’s difficult. And I think you can, that’s why the development process is taking so long, because it’s tough to figure out, ‘Okay, the comic is this one thing, and then this animated series is this other thing, and now this movie has to be this third thing.'”
Skybound has not announced any cast members yet. The movie remains in super early days of development, but we’ll continue to monitor it. In the meantime, Invincible will continue lighting up our screens in the animated series. Prime Video’s Invincible is one of the best superhero shows out there. And with many more seasons on the horizon, including a new one on February 6, now is the perfect time to stream it!
