5 Amazing Comic Book Anthologies You Need to Read

From spine-tingling tales, to adaptations of fan-favorite TV shows, here’s 5 anthology comics that you simply need to check out.

The comics medium has always led the way in anthologies. Whether that’s horror, sci-fi, fantasy, or a blend of everything, the comics medium offers some of the finest anthologies. Of course, there are so many comic book anthologies out there. Narrowing it down to just 5 is a nigh-on impossible task. Consider this list a spotlight of our favourites rather than a conclusive and definitive ‘top 5’. Anyway, let’s take a tour!

Creepshow/Super Creepshow

Creepshow is one of the most popular and beloved horror anthologies of all-time. It all began back in the ’80s with the original movie, directed by genre legend George A. Romero (of zombie movie fame) and written by Stephen King. The movie spawned a sequel, and of course, Greg Nicotero’s cult TV series on Shudder. The series would make its natural progression into the comics medium through Image Comics/Skybound in 2019, garnering a dedicated audience of its own.

Bringing Creepshow to comics was always going to be a natural and seamless progression. The stories work so well — in fact, some of my favourite Creepshow tales are within the comics.

Recently, the Creepshow comics got a spinoff of their own in the form of Super Creepshow, which tells ‘creepified‘ superhero stories. For instance, Super Creepshow #1 features stories about the horrors of super-speed, and a tale that likens Spider-Man to David Cronenberg’s The Fly.

Twisted Dark

Written by Neil Gibson of Twisted Comics, Twisted Dark is exactly what it says in the title. It’s a long-running compendium of short stories, from emotionally disturbing narratives, to deeply shocking stories, Gibson certainly delivers on his title. One thing that makes Twisted Dark stand out from the crowd, however, is that many of the stories involved are interconnected, whether loosely or heavily. It’s so rewarding when you notice a connection between the standalone stories!

In addition, Neil Gibson’s Twisted Comics has been adapting iconic Black Mirror episodes into comics with great success. Suffice to say, Twisted Comics has been publishing some top tier works in recent years.

Cruel Universe

I can’t profess to have read every issue of Cruel Universe, but every time I enter my local comic book store, I pick up the latest issue I see, and I’m never disappointed. And this is what anthology series are all about. You can pick up any issue and thoroughly enjoy it without being restricted by what came before.

Stories are unique and adventurous, created by some of the most esteemed names in the industry, from Chris Condon (That Texas Blood), to Matt Kindt (BRZRKR), to Ben H. Winters (The Last Policeman), and beyond. It’s the ultimate box of chocolates.

Ice Cream Man

Created by W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo, Ice Cream Man is an excellent horror anthology, featuring disparate ‘one-shot’ tales of sorrow, wonder, and redemption. Each story follows a different set of characters, each dealing with their own sufferings. Acting of the overseer of all these stories is the titular Ice Cream Man, a weaver of stories. Is he friend? Foe? God? What make ICM so unique is how deep it really is, offering an often profound exploration of the human condition.

So far, Ice Cream Man has been collected into 11 trade paperback volumes (covering issues 1–44).

Assorted Crisis Events

If you’ve been an avid reader of our site, you’ll know all about Assorted Crisis Events. The series, created by Deniz Camp alongside series artist Eric Zawadzki, is nothing short of extraordinary. In fact, we named it our #1 comic book series of 2025. It’s daring, pushing the medium to its limit through tales that range from mind-bending adventures, to devastatingly tales of heartbreak. As sci-fi as the tales get — and they do get wild very often — the human side always strikes at the forefront.

The range of stories in this series is incredible, and the success has seen the series rewarded with reprints and the first 5 issues collected in a glorious TBP edition. This series is a must-read for everyone.
