Indie Comics Spotlight, July 2025

Welcome back to our monthly indie comics spotlight column, where we share some of the brightest new and upcoming creators in the comics medium!

Last month, we shared a number of excellent creators, with comics covering a range of genres, from action and fantasy, to romance and sci-fi. As we enter July, we’ve got another exciting slate of projects for you to check out. Each description is written by the creators themselves. Let’s take a tour.

Candala by Rizky Arrydesta

Hi, I’m Rizky Arrydesta, the creator of CANDALA, a webcomic currently published on Toontube. Set in medieval Indonesia, CANDALA blends history with mysticism, exploring a unique world where the Candala—an outcast caste—deal with death and the supernatural.

The story follows Ayu, a young girl who becomes a Candala after her sister is devoured by a demon that steals her identity. Driven by revenge, Ayu’s journey dives deep into Indonesian myth, lore, and haunting legend. If you’re into dark fantasy with cultural depth, CANDALA offers a story you won’t forget.

Piper Jericho by AW White

From the chilling paranormal catastrophe of 1947 off Scotland’s coast, to the mind-bending mysteries of Utah’s Uintah Basin in 1953, and the nightmarish descent into horror on an abandoned oil rig in 1987, this graphic novel weaves a tapestry of terror and intrigue. Follow an elite agent as she confronts the essence of reality itself, questioning identity and existence.

Each event, linked by an ancient enigma, could herald humanity’s salvation or its ultimate downfall. Prepare to question everything you know in this gripping journey through time, where the past is as dangerous as the future.

You can find Piper Jericho on Amazon here.

Alleycat 2.0 by Gregory M. Guity, Kent Clark

An all-ages comic adventure combining the swashbuckling superheroism of Batman with the anthro intrigue of Blacksad: Alleycat 2.0!

Blockheads by James Lee

Blockheads is an alternative, slice of life comic about a family in a crime infested neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, who struggles with the effects of their patriarch Ali’s incarceration. While in prison, Ali finds genuine faith in God, which puts him on a mission to convert his family and help them all overcome the street blocks, the cell blocks, and the blocks in their own heads.
*This comic contains a little satire and a lot of conscious raising/social-political content which is geared towards a mature audience.*
