The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan reveals which scene from the series was the most emotionally draining to film. You’ll never guess what it is.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is one of the few actors in The Walking Dead Universe to reach the 10-year club. His journey has been immense, and completely divisive from the outset. In his first-ever scene, his character Negan brutally killed not one, but two beloved stars: Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun). To say his introduction was a baptism of fire would be a massive understatement.
Over the years, Negan went on to be slightly redeemed (but still widely hated), and he’s still living — featuring in The Walking Dead: Dead City alongside Maggie (Lauren Cohan). From his reign of terror, to brutally murdering countless characters — Negan has been front and centre of many controversial scenes.
According to Morgan himself there’s one particular moment that he found incredibly difficult to film. Yes, it was in his debut episode, The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be, but the specific moment, when when Negan locked down Rick Grimes and forced him to cut his own son’s arm off. Ultimately, Rick couldn’t do it, but the scene was incredibly chilling.
“I think maybe it was the Carl’s arm bit to be honest with you,” Morgan told Interview Magazine. “Look, that whole episode was hard, and also because I did go through and smack everybody with Lucille at a certain point. Everybody took a hit. All of that was hard. It got to the point where I didn’t want to do it anymore. Emotionally I was completely drained.”
“It was a hard episode, and having to get there time and time again to do these horrible things… They’re all good people, and I love them—the whole cast…”
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a decade into The Walking Dead Universe at the moment, and it seems like he’s here to say for a lot longer. Would you like to see him continue Negan’s journey long into the future? Tell us in the comments down below!
