The Penguin is the only comic book show in the top 10 most-nominated series at the 2025 Emmys.
Comic book shows have a pretty illustrious history at the Emmy Awards. The first instance of nominations dates way back to Batman (1966), where it secured 3 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The most nominated comic-based show ever is Watchmen (2019), which received an incredible 26 nominations, including 11 wins.
Since Watchmen, only the MCU’s WandaVision has come close with 23 nominations. But that has just changed. DC‘s The Penguin series, a spinoff project of Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie, has tallied up an impressive 24 nominations. The series misses out on top spot, which is occupied by Apple TV’s smash-hit, mind-bending drama Severance. Check out the full top 10 for yourself, which includes a number of geeky shows, from Star Wars series Andor, to beloved video game adaptation The Last of Us.

Some of the standout noms for The Penguin include Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series; Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Colin Farrell); Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Cristin Milioti); Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Lauren LeFranc); and Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Deirdre O’Connell).
Despite being nominated as an anthology series, there’s still a chance that The Penguin could get renewed for another season. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but there’s some rumours floating around on the grapevine. Right now, however, the focus is very much set on The Batman: Part 2.
