Netflix’s The Sandman may have concluded with Season 2, Part II, but there’s still one more episode on the way in the form of Death: The High Cost of Living.
With the arrival of The Sandman season 2, part II on July 24, Netflix’s Sandman saga has officially reached its conclusion. In the series finale, Dream of the Endless was ultimately killed after taking his son’s life; an act punishable by death by the Fates, the trio also known as The Kindly Ones as to not offend them. But dreams don’t simply die, and he is reborn in the form of Daniel Hall (played by Jacob Anderson).
While the main storyline has ended, there’s one more episode coming. The episode in question is a spinoff special called Death: The High Cost of Living, which is based on a spinoff graphic novel. The special is a complete standalone, following Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) as she spends her one day every 100 years as a mortal, to better understand her duties as Death.
During The High Cost of Living, Death takes to the mortal world in human form, spending the day in Central London. While there, she meets Sexton Furnival (Colin Morgan), a struggling, down-and-out journalist who’s tired of life. Taking pity on him, Death spends the day with Sexton.
“Our Sexton Furnival is an investigative journalist dealing with the climate emergency and wondering if he’s not making the world better, what his purpose is, and if it’s better to just check out and not be part of the problem,” showrunner Allan Heinberg told The Wrap.
He added: “This is an episode about ‘well is it even worth living in this world.’ It became an important episode for me to write right now about this moment.”
Death: The High Cost of Living drops on Netflix on Thursday, July 31. It’s one final sendoff for The Sandman!
