This is part of our ongoing series of best genre reads. We’ve previously covered the best zombie and horror series. Let’s jump into our dystopian selections!

Ripperland

We’re starting off very strong with Ripperland. From John Harris Dunning (Summer Shadows) and Steve Orlando (Midnighter, Martian Manhunter) this unique 4-issue comic series from Dark Horse Comics blends the Jack the Ripper mythos with Westworld. The comic is drawn by Alessandro Oliveri, coloured by Francesca Vivaldi and lettered by Fabio Amelia.

The story takes place in the year 2188, where post-Brexit England now operates as a theme park run by Americans. What’s more, in this new Victorian era London, infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper has returned. The murder of a U.S. mogul sparks Special Agent Jesse Holden to travel to investigate the mysterious killing. Paired with British Police Detective Edwin Fogg, the unlikely duo must work together to solve the case.

“Ripperland takes place over a century in the future when England has become a Victorian theme park, mainly for the pleasure of American tourists,” Dunning told us in our interview. “This is a bit of a comment on the colonial power of America, and the aggressive use of that power on the international stage.”

Exquisite Corpses

Written by James Tynion IV, Exquisite Corpses is what happens when you blend his writing prowess with the brutal, ever-popular ‘Battle Royale’ genre. Think of it as what you’d get if The Purge, The Hunger Games, and Squid Game all had a baby. Add to that a hint of The Running Man, and you’re thinking along the lines of what this comic is.

In Exquisite Corpses, the figures that the media portrays as powerful are nothing more than smoke screens; illusions that the general public perceive as world leaders. The real powerhouses are the wealthiest families in America, and every 5 years on Halloween they hold a sadistic game. This game involves 12 of the deadliest people in the world, each represented by a different family, dropped into a small town with just one goal: to be the last one standing. The latest game takes place in the quaint town of Oak Valley.

Tynion IV’s signature, twisted writing style is on full display, making every issue a riveting, fast paced page-turner. It’s gruesome and unpredictable. In addition, the bold art from Michael Walsh, paired with the bursting colours from Jordie Bellaire, deliver on making the comic a feast for the eyes.

Assorted Crisis Events

When we gave Assorted Crisis Events #1 a 5-star review, we could see it becoming an enormous success. The comic comes from a stellar creative team, including award-winning team of Deniz Camp (Absolute Martian Manhunter), artist Eric Zawadzki (House of El), colourist Jordie Bellaire (Birds of Prey), and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Assorted Crisis Events is an action-packed, chaotic, multi-apocalyptic series pushes the boundaries of the comic medium, while also being grounded enough to tell a very human story.

This series is undoubtedly one of the comic book events of 2025. It’s fresh, creative, poignant, wild, and a little of everything else.

News From the Fallout

News From the Fallout is a breathtakingly-illustrated dark horror sci-fi comic from Chris Condon and Jeffrey Allan Love. The series takes place in 1962 Nevada, where a nuclear bomb test fails to enormously disastrous consequences. The only survivor from the epicentre of the test is U.S. Army private Otis Fallows. As the immense fallout unleashes a wicked contaminate into the atmosphere, powerful enough to turn people rotten monsters, Otis flees the scene. With this comic, we’re talking about a blend of The Crazies with a bit of zombie substance mixed in; but it’s very much its own thing.

System Preference

System Preference is far from just another AI-focused story. It’s a poignant, timely piece with an Orwellian twist. Originally released in France in 2019, the graphic novel came to English-language in 2025. Published by Titan Comics, this short-but-powerful graphic novel takes place in a highly political and dystopian society— with numerous comparisons to Orwell’s legendary Nineteen Eighty-Four – and blends it with robotics and plausible (but still very exaggerated) AI and technological scenarios. Readers will also find that it plays out like a classic Black Mirror episode; technologically driven, thought-provoking, and cautionary.

In System Preference, we follow Yves, an archivist at the Bureau of Essentials, who’s got the job of deleting old archived content, such as novels, films, and other media, with the purpose of dumping them to save space for new data, namely social media videos and posts.

The internet is crumbling under the weight of the immense date it holds. However, Yves quietly goes against the orders of his bosses, who are masked figures known as the Prophets, and he instead sneakily hides data inside Mikki, his family’s domesticated robot — who’s also the surrogate carrier for Yves and his partner’s child. Yves soon learns that the cost of preserving the past, may very well impact his family’s future.
