‘Batman #1’ Review: Kicking Off a New Era in Gotham City

Of all the comics of 2025, the one I’ve been most anticipating is Batman #1, a comic that marks only the fourth renumbering in the Batman’s illustrious 85-year history. Does it get off to a killer start?

After so much talk and anticipation, the next era of Batman is being ushered in by Eisner Award-winning writer Matt Fraction (Hawkeye, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen), artist Jorge Jiménez (Batman, Summer of Superman Special), colorist Tomeu Morey, and letterer Clayton Cowles.

Long-time Batman fans will be struck by the immediate new look of Gotham. It’s a new Gotham City, as well as a new-look costume, new villains, and of course, a cool new ride for the caped crusader. It’s a new look, but it feels familiar. It’s brighter than so many dark and gritty entries.

The story itself takes place long after Bruce Wayne has established himself as Batman. He’s a known figure in Gotham, from the residents to the police force. His ways are largely disliked, but he’s got his supporters, too. The central villain is Killer Croc. From the beginning, the issue ponders the question: Is it possible to change? It’s a question that resonates not just with villain Killer Croc (Waylon Jones), but also Batman himself. There’s an intrinsic connection between them, and Fraction cleverly leverages it to establish Wayne’s feelings towards his past.

This version of Batman is refreshingly empathetic; he’s less the ominous, vengeful lone wolf of recent years. He genuinely seems to care about the people of Gotham, whether friend or enemy. On that note, I can’t wait to see how he works alongside Tim Drake as Robin.

The comic is naturally fast-paced. From Fraction’s fast, Batman-focused style to Jiménez’s engaging layouts, it captures the chaos and bustle of Gotham City with a flourish. Jiménez especially has explored Gotham City from multiple angles over the years. This new foray he demonstrates another excellent side of his range.

Overall, Batman #1 (or Batman Vol 4 #1 if we’re being pedantic) is a triumphant beginning, ushering in a new and exciting new era for the caped crusader. It’s bold and different, but not enough to feel jarring. I’m already so stoked to read on and see where Fraction takes this new take.
