‘The War of the Worlds’ Returns With an All-New Spinoff Comic!

H.G. Wells’ seminal 1898 novel The War of the Worlds is one of the most celebrated and influential works of science fiction of all time. The novel has had many adaptations and spinoff tales over the years. Up next is Thunder Child

Published by Titan Comics, The War of the Worlds: Thunder Child is a spinoff graphic novel that runs parallel to the events of the seminal original novel. The ambitious project is penned by Matt Hardy (Cadavers, Last Exit to Brighton) with artists Rob Jones (Hell in Stalingrad) and Kevin Castaniero (The Reason for Dragons, Cocaine Disco).

The full synopsis reads:

The War of the Worlds: Thunder Child follows the exploits of the crew of the eponymous ironclad torpedo ram, the HMS Thunder Child. Sitting alongside the events of Wells’ novel, the story takes place against a backdrop of strange occurrences and creeping terror, all leading up to the Thunder Child’s final heroic showdown with the invaders from Mars.

This is a terrifying and thrilling tale soaked in blood, recriminations, sacrifice and loss, the first act in a new take on the well-known science-fiction classic with a unique cast and its own story to tell.

It’ll be interesting to see how this comic goes down. Of course, there’s been myriad adaptations and versions of the story over the years. Perhaps the most widely regarded is the Steven Spielberg movie starring Tom Cruise, which was far from a faithful adaptation, but remains the most engrained version of the story in pop culture. The story was also made into an iconic musical by Jeff Wayne. There’s plenty of versions of War of the Worlds out there. A spinoff graphic novel, however, is more than unique enough to stand out from the crowd.

The War of the Worlds: Thunder Child goes on sale June 2, 2026!
