James Gunn Compares ‘Supergirl’ to His Legendary Marvel Movies

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe got off to a stellar start with Superman. Up next is Supergirl, which according to Gunn himself, is a ‘space adventure’ much like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Before James Gunn began ushering in his all new DC Universe alongside Peter Safran, he worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the MCU side of things, he struck gold with his Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The space opera films took a group of Marvel outcasts and made them some of the most beloved and recognisable characters in the entire franchise. We’re talking Star-Lord, Groot, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and so on. The Guardians had their own trilogy, a one-off Christmas special, and the team played a big role in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Gunn’s signature style is his whacky and whimsical movies. After Guardians, most of his projects, including The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Superman, have taken on this style. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Supergirl follows suit.Supergirl especially is a space adventure,” Gunn explained in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, comparing it to his Marvel masterpiece: “It’s like Guardians.”

One thing Gunn always utilises in his projects is music. From the Guardians mixtape, featuring everything from Come and Get Your Love to Hooked On a Feeling, to Wig Wam’s Do You Wanna Taste It from the Peacemaker intro. While these songs may have been well-known, they were introduced to a whole new generation of listeners. There’s an intrinsic connection between Gunn’s movies and music. Looking ahead to Supergirl (and his upcoming Lanterns series), the trend very much continues.

“There’s songs in both of those things,” he explains. “But I don’t give a shit if there’s songs in something or not. For me, I use songs like — listen, Supermanto me was a score movie. There’s just the one song that is strangely probably the biggest sort of hit song I’ve had out of a show that wasn’t Wig Wam. You know, maybe ‘Come and Get Your Love’ from the first Guardians. But everybody knew “Come and Get Your Love.” It was like a rediscovery of a song from a new perspective”
