Yes, a Star Wars and Marvel Crossover Event is OFFICIALLY Happening
After decades of ‘will it/won’t it’ happen, we must ponder no longer: a Star Wars and Marvel crossover comics is officially set with Kevin Smith penning the script.
Marvel Comics has been publishing Star Wars stories for decades at this point, and the collaboration continues to bear excellent stories. But up to now, there’s never been an official crossover — although that’s not without hefty rumours. A crossover has been a topic of contention for many years now. In fact, back in February there was a summer that long-time comic scribe Mark Millar (Civil War, Kick-Ass) was attached to the project. However, all of the gossip spiralled out of control. Turns out, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the crossover event is not happening. “And in another example of the Internet being stupid, a rumour spread about a Star Wars/Marvel/Avengers cross over comic book to be written by love him or hate him author Mark Millar,” the report reads. “It was like Alderaan exploded all over again. In any case, we’re hearing it’s not true, so have some blue milk and cookies.”
Now, however, a report from Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that a crossover event is officially in the pipeline. The crossover, penned by Kevin Smith and drawn by David Marquez, is titled Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles. The 5-issue series launches in January 2027.
According to Entertainment Weekly, all our favourites will be crossing paths. “Figures like Chewbacca, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia will join Earth-616 — the primary continuity in which most stories of Marvel Comics take place —and mingle with the likes of Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom and the Marvel rogue’s gallery will join the likes of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire,” the report reads.
“Back in the early ‘80s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga,” Smith said in a statement. “So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I’m ecstatic to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! Many thanks to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me to fly the Falcon and the Quinjet!”
“With Hope Assembles, Kevin Smith has written a true love letter to Star Wars, to Marvel, and to comics in general,” Michael Siglain, creative director at Lucasfilm Publishing, said. “And combined with David Marquez’s incredible art, we’ll see the heroes and villains of Star Warsteam up and battle with the heroes and villains of Earth-616. The five issue series kicks off in January 2027. The fifth and final instalment releases in May 2027, just in time for Star Wars day.
