'Ready Player One' Is Getting a Graphic Novel: Here’s All The Details On Our Return to The OASIS

We’ve known for some time now that Ernest Cline’s beloved novel Ready Player One is getting a graphic novel adaptation. Ahead of its launch in October 2026, here’s everything you need to know about it.

Over a decade ago, Ernest Cline took readers inside his ’80s-inspired, virtual-reality world known as The OASIS. The novel was an enormous commercial success, and Cline later penned a sequel novel, aptly titled Ready Player Two. But outside of the books, Ready Player One was projected into the eyes of the masses through the 2018 Steven Spielberg movie adaptation. The film contained a gluttony of fan-service, and while it wasn’t Spielberg’s most esteemed title, it has garnered cult status over the years. A sequel movie is said to be in development, but nothing has been announced, so watch this space.

While Ernest Cline has pondered returning to his Ready Player One universe for further stories, there’s no sequels or prequels in the immediate pipeline. However, fans will soon get the chance to immerse themselves inside The OASIS once more in the upcoming graphic novel adaptation, adapted by Scott Peterson and illustrated by Meredith Laxton. With full-colour artwork, the graphic novel promises immersion into the story like never before.

Of course, while the movie adaptation was a feast for the eyes, it wasn’t quite the direct adaptation of the novel that some fans had hoped for. It re-worked and invented new games that our protagonist Wade had to play, including a race and entering the world of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Those changes worked in the movie sense — they offered a more visual spectrum for Spielberg to play around with. On the other hand, the graphic novel has the opportunity to present unique visuals to Cline’s original narrative.
