New ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Comic Series ‘Kyoshi Warriors’ is Coming

Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko helped develop an all-new comic series Kyoshi Warriors, coming in May.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is on the crust of another wave at the moment. Of course, the live-action Netflix remake will return later this year for its next instalment. But more exciting than that is the return of the animated side of things, in the form of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, which is set to arrive later this year (hopefully in cinemas).

The series has continued to endure in the comics medium over the years too, with great success. Publisher Dark Horse Comics has become the home of ATLA comics, with titles such as The Search, The Rift, Suki Alone, and so on. And now, Avatar: The Last Airbender will release perhaps its most exciting comic series yet. The upcoming 3-issue series, Avatar: The Last Airbender — Kyoshi Warriors,  is created by Brandon Hoáng (The Crossbow of Destiny), illustrated by BellBessa (Avatar: The Last Airbender — Ramen Rumble) and Xanthe Bouma, colored by Adele Matera (Avatar: The Last Airbender — Ashes of the Academy), and lettered by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt (Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest). The series will be told over three monthly installments.

Additionally, the series was developed by original series  Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, in collaboration with Avatar Studios.

The official synopsis for the upcoming comic series reads: “Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors leave their island home to join the war against the Fire Nation. Met with suspicion and resentment by the mainlanders, they struggle to prove their worth to the Earth Kingdom. But when that opportunity arises, will they be willing to compromise their values as Kyoshi Warriors to embrace it?”
