The Walking Dead star Danai Gurira has joined another Robert Kirkman series, voicing Universa in Invincible season 4.
Danai Gurira first joined AMC’s The Walking Dead season 2, going on to become one of the franchise’s most esteemed stars. She played Michonne consistently until her final appearance in the main series in season 10. She would later make her triumphant return to the franchise alongside co-star Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) in requisite sequel-spinoff The Ones Who Live. Her future in the Walking Dead universe remains uncertain, but her character is still alive, and we wouldn’t rule out seeing her return at some point in the future.
Since The Walking Dead, Gurira has gone on to portray another massive comic book character in the form of Okoye, one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most respected Wakandan warriors and leaders. She’s expected to reprise the role later this year in Avengers: Endgame. But before then, Gurira is getting involved another big IP. She’s playing Universa in Prime Video’s wildly popular adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s superhero series Invincible. Of course, Kirkman also created The Walking Dead, and Invincible has already seen several former TWD actors take up voice roles, including Steven Yeun, Ross Marquand, Lauren Cohan, Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James, Sonequa Martin-Green, Khary Payton, Chad L. Colman and Cliff Curtis, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Gurira plays Universa, an enforcer for the Coalition of Planets. She’s one of the most powerful forces in the Invincible Universe, boasting immense strength and energy-based powers. Her first appearance comes in Invincible #69, when she harkens to Earth in search of the one called Mark Grayson, aka Invincible.
Additionally, Forbes has posted a first-look still of Universa taking a punch from Atom Eve in Invincible season 4:
