While it might have felt like Steve Rogers got a definitive ending to his story in Avengers: Endgame, that is not the case. Chris Evans is returning as Captain America for Avengers: Doomsday.
We should all know by now: Just because a character in the MCU gets a conclusion to their story, doesn’t mean we’ll never see them again. That doesn’t just go for characters, but actors as well. Look no further than Robert Downey Jr., who will return to the franchise as arch-villain Doctor Doom, after playing fan-favorite Tony Stark for so many years. And why stop there? Recent rumours even suggest that the Mad Titan himself, Thanos, is poised for a triumphant return to action.
As for Captain America, we last saw him at the end of Avengers: Endgame. He got a happy ending. It was warm and wholesome, seeing him reunite with Peggy Carter where they will, presumably, age together naturally. Of course, Chris Evans wasn’t out of MCU employment for long, returning in his former role of Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine. And looking ahead to Avengers: Doomsday, he will officially return as Captain America. His return was confirmed in the first teaser for Doomsday. Take a look:
Hang on… isn’t Sam Wilson the new Captain America? Well, yes, but clearly the Russo Brothers couldn’t resist the temptation of having Steve Rogers don the shield once more. “We have a special affinity with the character. We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it, basically. The special place he holds among the ensemble, he sort of retains that moving forward,” Anthony Russo told Empire Magazine in a recent interview.
Interestingly, the Russos don’t see the teasers that have already released as such. “Each one of those trailers is narrative information,” Joe Russo teased. “It’s all part of a larger story,” he teased. “So I would argue that Doomsday has already started for you.”
“Look, the movie is very complex,” he added. “We thought one of the best ways to celebrate what the movie is was to give characters their own space and highlight some moments.”
Doomsday has already amassed a gluttony of characters, from our original Avengers team, to the New Avengers, to the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and beyond, the cast of Doomsday is chock-full. It will undoubtedly be the geeky movie event of the year. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theatres on December 18, 2026. While we wait, give us all your theories in the comments down below!
