DC Comics Preview: Katie Kane Returns in ‘Batwoman #1’

In this preview, we take a look at Greg Rucka’s all-new Batwoman series, debuting on March 18.

Long-time DC Comics writer Greg Rucka (Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia) is ushering in an all-new Batwoman series with artist Dani, colourist Matt Hollingsworth and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Of course, Rucka is the writer and co-creator of the modern Batwoman, best known for the Elegy storyline J.H. Williams III, and this DC Next Level title promises to bring Batwoman to a new generation.

“There are a handful of characters that if I’m offered, I’d sit up and beg like a puppy,” Rucka said in a statement when the project was announced (per AIPT). “And Kate is one of them. When I left in 2009, it went unresolved. When you have the story and it’s in your head and you have to walk away for some reason, the story doesn’t go away.”

What’s more, the story sets itself in Greece. “It’s shaking things up, and it’s starting in a very dark place—and it’ll only go down from there,” he added. “It’s a story I wanted to tell back in the day, but the world moves on, and so does this story.”

The official synopsis for Batwoman #1 reads:

Batwoman. Daughter. Sister. Soldier. Hero.

But since she was 10 years old, Kate Kane has lived in the shadow of a prophecy and the machinations of a religion devoted to the end of all things. How do you fight the devil when the devil is real? And how do you win?

Acclaimed writer and co-creator of the modern Batwoman, Greg Rucka, returns to the story of Kate Kane alongside visionary artist DaNi for a DC Next Level series that will redefine Batwoman and her mission for a new generation.
