The Marvel Cinematic Universe premieres Daredevil: Born Again in March. The series sees the triumphant solo return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock. Plus, it’ll also see Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) back in action!

When Marvel announced the return of Daredevil in Born Again, it seemed pretty obvious that Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll would be involved. Their characters were central to the original series. As well as Murdock’s business partners, they were the beating heart of the series. As Murdock’s best friends, they were the only people he could truly trust and confide in.

Fans simply wouldn’t accept the idea of both being uninvolved in the reboot. They are a family. They come as a team. So when showrunner Dario Scardapane gave his pitch for the reboot, he ardently made it clear that the reboot would not work without the key original characters.

“That was actually one of the first things I said to the bosses,” Scardapane said in a recent interview with Empire. “You can’t do this show without Karen and Foggy. They’re Matt’s family. They’re the heart of his world. You can’t take them out without explaining why, and if that explanation doesn’t ring true, don’t take them out.”

Scardapane went on to explain that the original of the new series of the reboot didn’t hold true to the original show. “It was much less the world we knew, and more trying to blaze a new trail,” he revealed. “But in doing so, they’d forgotten some things that really were necessary to the engine of the story.”

In fact, he was so steadfast in his desire to keep the core trio together that breaking it up was a dealbreaker decision for him:

“I was willing to lose a job over this one. Because Season 3 of the Netflix show ended with a dream, with the names on that napkin. If you don’t pay that off, you’re not giving your characters context. You can’t ignore that dream.”

Scardapane’s plans for the series, such as keeping the core trio in tact, is exactly the reason why he is the perfect person to usher the series into the larger MCU. He understands the characters, and it shows. Somehow, Born Again will be even darker and grittier than its predecessor, too. Check out the trailer:
