Why Daredevil: Born Again’s Season 3 Time Jump Is Secretly Great News for Fans

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 ends with something that has comic book readers extremely excited: Matt Murdock is behind bars. Why is this potentially a good thing? Well, it opens up the possibility for the series to adapt one of the Man Without Fear’s most popular storylines.

The season finale of Daredevil: Born Again was bittersweet, to say the least. After another season of battling Wilson Fisk and his oppressive mayoral operation in New York City, Matt Murdock finally managed to bring him down. In the final moments, Mayor Fisk’s empire crumbles as the Attorney General and Governor McCaffrey work to remove him from office. However, it comes at a massive price for Matt Murdock, who gives up his secret identity as Daredevil in order to incriminate Fisk and save Karen Page. Murdock’s plan works, but it comes at the price of sacrificing himself and resigning to a hefty prison sentence.

When we next see Murdock in Season 3, he will have been behind bars for over a year. The show will take a time jump of around a year for its third season, following both Murdock and Fisk in their respective places: Murdock ended behind bars, Fisk wound up on a beach. “There will be a small time jump, but it’s not too significant,” Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, told Screen Rant. ” It’s not like we’re jumping ahead five years or anything. We’re probably jumping ahead a year or so, kind of like the real-life distance between seasons. And yeah, Fisk’s exile is its own story. So it’s fun watching these two characters be in their own places in season three.”

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 can adapt The Devil in Cell Block D

Why is this good news for fans? Well, it opens up the possibility for the series adapt Ed Brubaker’s legendary run: The Devil in Cell Block D (as found in Daredevil Vol. 2 #82–87). The comic run is widely regarded as one of the best Daredevil stories ever. It’s brutal and raw, pushing Matt Murdock to his absolute limit and breaking point. The ending of Born Again Season 2 certainly sets up the storyline: Murdock’s secret identity has been exposed, and he surrenders and succumbs to imprisonment. In Brubaker’s arc, Murdock is thrown into Ryker’s Island, where there is also Fisk, Hammerhead, and, eventually, Bullseye.

The big difference that an adaptation would have to deal with is Murdock’s unconfirmed exposure — his identity is leaked, but not confirmed. While imprisoned, he cannot use his powers because he would be immediately found out to be Daredevil. In Season 3, the world already knows that Murdock is Daredevil, so a direct adaptation is impossible, but it could no doubt take heavy inspiration. The writers could lean into the psychological impact imprisonment has on Murdock, showing him fighting without the suit and without the law to protect him. Given the one-year time jump, we’d see a version of Matt Murdock hardened by incarceration.  It should lean into him being a wanted inmate, especially if any of his other nemesis’ find themselves inside.

Even partially adapting The Devil in Cell Block D feels like an opportunity too good to pass up.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is expected to release on Disney+ in March 2027. We’ll keep you posted with all the latest updates.
