Only recently we published a big article about why Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’ Batman #1 is one of DC’s most important re-launches in years. Especially in an era where Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman is taking over. And when you compound all of the new Bat-content — many of which take very different angles on Gotham and Batman lore — it’s easily one of the best times to be a Batman fan. And that isn’t just in comics, it extends to wider media too, look no further than the big screen, which will see Robert Pattinson’s The Batman return in 2027 as well as an all-new caped crusader within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.
With such a gluttony of Batman content out there, Matt Fraction feels the weighty competition with other creators writing in the same space — but it’s healthy competition. The way these Batman stories are being told, there’s plenty of scope for each continuity to explore the dark knight from different angles. “It’s a great time because there are so many different takes of him out there, It feels like everybody can get it,” Fraction said in a recent interview, per Popverse. “It feels like a really well broad menu with a lot of cool tastes and flavors on it right now.”
“I love that Absolute and us exist at the same time,” he added, in reference to Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman, which remains a defining title of the modern comic book era. “And that stuff that Scott and Nick are doing all of their fill-in guys, it just makes me competitive in the best way. I’m jealous and energized and excited and inspired and I just want to push harder and harder. And they could not be more different. You might as well watch Ben Affleck and Lego Batman. It’s a great time to be a Bat-person.”
The gluttony of Batman content isn’t ending soon. Quite the opposite. In fact, Absolute Batman artist Nick Dragotta is on record of saying he’s happy to draw over 100 issues of the series. And obviously, Fraction and Jiminez’s run began a new renumbering for Batman, so it’ll undoubtedly be around for a long time. Speaking of which, Volume 1 of Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’ Batman series, titled Daylight, arrives in stores on June 2. You can pre-order it here.
