Review: Supergirl (2026)

Supergirl is the latest theatrical instalment in the DCU, and it was a mixture of feelings and thoughts.

Supergirl is inspired by the storyline of Tom King’s ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, and as someone who has read that comic book, the film does feel quite distant from the source material.

Milly Alcock shines as Kara Zor-El, her experiences and traumas play an integral part to her life as she is defined by tragedy, but learns to overcome it by balancing the good aspects that people, like Ruthye (Kara’s ward) sees in her, despite her drunken exterior.

The action and fight scenes were well executed and it definitely has a gritty tone compared to James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, which is a very good contrast between the two characters as they are extreme opposites to each other, despite fighting for the same course.

The film went by really quickly and it didn’t feel like it had enough time to process what was really going on, which is sad to say because the comic book is quite extensive in terms of story and characters.

Jason Mamoa as Lobo is as perfect as expected, he owns that character and portrayed him so well that it felt like he jumped out of the comic pages, hopefully we see more of him as there is so much more to him than people realise.

Overall, the film does underperform but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable, it had some fun moments but collectively, it felt rushed, and there were some plot holes which I did notice and didn’t make sense. But with all this being said, it’s a good film but it needed more exploration.

Hopefully the ‘Lanterns’ series on HBO MAX, starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler delivers the exploration that we need from iconic DC characters. Can’t wait to see how that all unfolds in August.
