20 Years Later, Seth Green Is Finally Bringing Back His Cult-Classic Comic Series

Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov are teaming back up with Top Cow for the Freshmen 20th Anniversary Kickstarter, featuring a brand-new 32-page reunion special.
20 years ago in 2006, Seth Green co-created superhero comedy Freshmen with writer Hugh Sterbakov. The series follows a group of socially awkward college students who survive a strange laboratory accident and emerge with superpowers inspired by whatever they were thinking about at the moment of the explosion. Equal parts superhero adventure, college comedy, and coming-of-age story, Freshmen explores what happens when ordinary young people are handed extraordinary abilities without the experience, maturity, or confidence to handle them.
All these years later, the series is regarded as a cult classic. Freshmen lasted for two mini-series and one special spanning roughly two years, from June 2005 to August 2007. The series is comprised of 13 issues, going on hiatus until this latest revival for its 20th-anniversary. Despite the 20 year gap, Freshmen remains as relevant as it was when it first debuted: it’s a grounded and character-driven superhero narrative, combining wit with genuine emotional stakes. The forthcoming reunion is comprised in a 32-page, 20th Anniversary Reunion Special, written by Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov with artwork by original series artist Leonard Kirk. It will be available as a standalone comic book and included in the hardcover edition.
The story reunites the original cast as they reflect on adulthood, friendship, old romances… and one hilariously disastrous mission they never quite managed to forget.
“I feel great,” Seth Green told AIPT. “Hugh and I set out to tell a meaningful story about these kids, and I feel like that’s what we did. I’m delighted to know that so many people connected with it and still think about it this many years later. And it’s exciting to be able to tell a new story in these kids’ world.”
“I think the 20th anniversary of Freshmen kind of mirrors the last 20 years of our lives. In that time, we’ve both gotten married. We were each other’s best men. Seth has had a kid, and I’ve had two, the older of which is about to be a senior in high school. She just…didn’t exist 20 years ago,” Sterbakov added.
The upcoming comic launches with a Kickstarter campaign on August 18, 2026. As always, the Kickstarter has plenty of unique offerings, featuring exclusive formats, collectible
rewards, stretch goals, special add-ons, behind-the-scenes material, and additional surprises created specifically for backers.
