DC Comics has announced an all-new Supergirl run from acclaimed comics writer Sophie Campbell (Wet Moon, Shadoweyes)!
DC has massive plans for its Superman franchise this year. So much that the publisher has a whole Summer of Superman initiative underway. This all goes hand in hand with the launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new Superman movie coming in July, seeing David Corenswet take the reins as the world’s latest Man of Steel.
The ‘Summer of Superman’ initiative has already got a lot of big projects attached to it. But Superman himself aside, in May, acclaimed comics creator Sophie Campbell will release her own Supergirl run, launching on May 13. This aligns it well with the forthcoming release of the Superman movie, in which Milly Alcock is confirmed to debut as Supergirl.
So what will Campbell’s Supergirl comic be about? So far, we only have a little log-line. Kara returns to her hometown of Midvale, only to discover that an imposter Supergirl has already taken her place.
Per DC’s official press release, Campbell teased a little of what readers can expect of her story. “I came up in the comics industry doing mostly graphic novels that I wrote and drew myself, so doing the same with Supergirl feels like I’m returning to my storytelling roots,” she said. She went on to cite her biggest creative influences and inspirations for the comic.
“My main touchstones to Kara Zor-El were the stories and the wild costumes from the 70’s, the 1984 Supergirl movie, and The CW show, which I was a huge fan of. In creating this version of Supergirl, I’ll be drawing on some of those influences as the series unfolds.”
Supergirl’s new look!
The new style for Supergirl was designed by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, who posted the design on Instagram. Check it out:

“In designing a new costume for Supergirl, my goal is to create something fresh while keeping the key elements intact,” Lau captioned. “I adopted the theme of ‘sporty and fun, but packs a punch,’ by giving her a modern fitness compression cropped top and a tennis inspired skirt to allow the freedom of movements while giving her a sense of strength and beauty. The little exposure of her abs also adds a tinge of fitness and chic. To complete the look I redesigned her chest symbol to give it a more dynamic spin.”
Supergirl arrives in comic stores and online on Wednesday, May 14. Will you be reading? Tell us in the comments down below!
