L. Frank Baum’s Beloved ‘The Patchwork Girl of Oz’ Comes to Life in New Graphic Novel

This year, L. Frank Baum’s beloved Oz tale The Patchwork Girl of Oz was adapted into a graphic novel series by Oddly Normal creator Otis Frampton.

Created by L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz hit the mainstream with the seminal 1939 movie. Over the years, the story, and subsequent novels, have been at the forefront of pop vulture, being adapted into all sorts of mediums, from film and television, to stage plays and musicals.

The world of Oz has had something of a resurgence in recent years, thanks most of all to Wicked; the musical that was made into a blockbuster movie in 2024, with its sequel set to drop later this year. There was even a graphic novel adaptation of The Wizard of Oz released recently by Soo Lee, which proved to be popular.

In 2025, Image Comics published adaptation of Baum’s popular Oz story The Patchwork Girl of Oz by esteemed Oddly Normal creator Otis Frampton. The story was adapted over 5 issues: #1 (Jan 2025) through #5 (June 2025).

In The Patchwork Girl of Oz, readers join Ojo the Unlucky and his newfound friend, Scraps—the exuberant and unpredictable Patchwork Girl—on an epic quest to find the magical ingredients needed to free Ojo’s uncle from a wicked spell. Along the way, they encounter an array of oddball characters, face perilous challenges, and uncover the deep mysteries of Oz! This spellbinding graphic novelization of the classic children’s novel will transport readers to a world where anything is possible, and every patch tells a story.
