You’ll never, ever believe this, but David Tennant is reportedly being lined up to return to Doctor Who again.
There are but three certainties in life: death, taxes, and David Tennant returning to the Whoniverse. After three seasons as the Tenth Doctor, as well as a guest appearance in an anniversary special, and a 3-episode season as the Fourteenth Doctor, Tennant is the most ubiquitous actor in the ‘New Who’ era.
Despite getting a beautiful ending as the Fourteenth Doctor, which provided plenty of closure and a warm ending to his story, the ‘wobbly wobbly timey wimey’ nature of Doctor Who means ending are never really conclusive.
With the source of the report coming from The Sun, it’s hardly concrete evidence. Take it with a pinch of salt, or two… or three. It’s quite possibly the easiest rumour to spread. Even so, with the 20th-anniversary of the ‘New Who’ era coming up later this year, a special featuring Tennant being reunited with iconic companion-turned-Doctor Billie Piper would make a lot of sense. ‘There is talk about a possible one-off project to celebrate the 20th anniversary,” a source told the tabloid. “David and Billie were a hugely popular partnership and he brought in a golden age of Doctor Who.’
“With the anniversary of the reboot this year, there have been some ideas floated about,” it explains, “with the thought of maybe bringing David and Billie back together for one last hurrah.”
In the season finale of Doctor Who ‘season 2’, Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor bowed out. His tenure, containing a mixture of brilliant and disappointing episodes, was one of the shortest in the show’s history. What got fans really talking was his regeneration, where the new Doctor was revealed to be none other than Billie Piper, who previously played fan-favorite Rose Tyler in the series. This wasn’t the first time the Doctor has regenerated into a familiar face, given Peter Capaldi had also played a different role before becoming the titular Time-Lord.
With Billie Piper now the Doctor, the rumour mill is spinning in full force. Don’t believe all of these rumours, unless it comes from the official Doctor Who pages. However, I wouldn’t put it past the Whoniverse team to bring Tennant back. It’s an easy. fan-service way to draw in viewers. Tennant is, in my opinion, the absolute best Doctor. But let’s continue looking to the future, not the past.
