David Lloyd’s ACES WEEKLY Presents ‘Before We Sail’ — A Poignant, Post-Apocalyptic Comic

In his comics debut, writer Carlos Yacolca presents Before We Sail, a 7-part post-apocalyptic comic, which explores the consequences of life continuing in a society that has no confidence in having a future.

Before We Sail is written by Carlos Yacolca in his debut foray to comics. The work is drawn by Michelle Lino, marking her return to the medium after a 6 -year break, and lettered by Diego Revelo. Alberto Reyo (Heavy Metal Magazine) is an editor, with David Escobedo working on design. The project will be told across 7 pars in comics in online magazine ACES WEEKLY — helmed by comics legend David Lloyd (V for Vendetta).

“For me, art is a superior medium of communication, and comics the greatest art of all” said writer Yacolca. “Making a first sound is a difficult task, so I thought of creating something like a three-song EP to express my ideas as a starting point, to expand on later as l improve as a writer and a person. This is planned to be the beginning of a constant communication via other works.”

“This work was born from a deep admiration for comics. I’m fascinated by how the resources of graphic art— line, composition, color, and visual silences can produce more than words can do alone, expanding the meaning and effed of any narrative,” says Lino. “After a long break, coming back to comics with this story is a way of showing the evolution of my style, and a way of reconnecting with an art form l’m passionate about.”

Yacolca added, “The genre of the story is a classic one. As it’s my first shot, I wanted to start with some simple clay to see how I could mold it to express my ideas with. It’ll be up to the reader to judge whether we’ve been successful in that endeavor.”

Before We Sail is serialised over 7 weeks, beginning in ACES WEEKLY 75 on July 7. The magazine also has plenty of other stories to check out, such as:
