Will Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy ever return for a fourth instalment? If you ask the cast, the answer is a resounding, “I don’t know.”
When James Gunn introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, it was a risky move. The cosmic superhero team were not necessarily a guaranteed money-making machine, at least compared to other heroes the franchise could’ve introduced. However, the GOTD movie was an unprecedented success, becoming one of the franchise’s most esteemed teams, carving out the cosmic side of the MCU, and spawning three movies (as well as making further appearances across the MCU).
The success of Guardians of the Galaxy is very much testament to James Gunn, whose steadfast vision for the characters paid off dividends. Gunn helmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023 before ultimately departing the Marvel Universe to instead build out his own DC continuity alongside Peter Safran. The latter began in 2025 with the release of Superman.
As for where that leaves the Guardians remains to be seen. Right now, there’s no official confirmation that any of the characters will return in Avengers: Doomsday later this year. And according to Sean Gunn — James Gunn’s brother who played Kraglin Obfonteri of the Ravagers — a potential fourth movie is not wholly out of the question. But of course, such a decision is not his to make.
“In some ways, it’s almost like a little above my pay grade,” Sean Gunn said, via CBR. “It’s like, if they decide to do it, if they decide that they can put the pieces together and get the right cast, and get a script that they really like and that works, then it would depend on who wrote that script and who was putting it together. And by that point there would probably already be somebody who was part of it, so I don’t know.”
In addition, for Pom Klementieff (Mantis), the Guardians series reached the right ending, and a fourth movie was never on the table. “I don’t know,” she said. “We never talked about a Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4. It was always imagined as a trilogy.”
