Image Comics Publishing New Edition of ‘Ocean’ Amid Resurgence in UFO Interest
Amid increased interest in extraterrestrial stories this year, Image Comics is bringing back cult sci-fi comic Ocean in one complete, standalone edition.
As humans, we’ve always had an obsession with aliens, but our interest fleets and grows particularly as a result of what’s in the media. For instance, back when Steven Spielberg unveiled ET in 1982, the alien archetype was changed forever. Of course, this year has already been a big one for extraterrestrial storytelling thanks to Spielberg’s return to aliens with Disclosure Day. And with this piqued interest, comic book publisher Image Comics is jumping on the hype train, notably publishing a new trade paperback edition of the cult-classic, first contact graphic novel Ocean by Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Netflix’s Castlevania, Trees) and artist Chris Sprouse (Black Panther, Tom Strong, Batman).
This new edition marks the graphic novel’s first reprint in years; it was originally collected by WildStorm (an imprint of DC Comics) way back in 2004. The new edition collects all six issues of the miniseries. It is set to hit shelves this Fall.
What is Ocean about?
Ocean is a provocative, standalone graphic novel that is a must-read perfect for fans of the movie Arrival or Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation.
The official synopsis reads: In Ocean, Jupiter’s moon Europa is wrapped in a half-mile-thick mantle of ice, and beneath it is the only off-world ocean known to humanity. A tiny research station in orbit around Europa discovers something unsettling laying dormant beneath the ice—something that sends U.N. weapons inspector Nathan Kane to Europa to make an assessment. Thousands of coffins are suspended in the Europan ocean, and Kane and the researchers aren’t the only people in orbit who want to know what’s inside them.
