New supernatural horror comic book Excommunicated is a top tier beginning to the sinister mystery. Is it worth reading? Here’s our review!
Published by Vault Comics, Excommunicated is a new supernatural horror series from New York Times bestselling author Jeremy Robinson (Infinite, Project Nemesis), artist Tiago Palma (X-Men United), colorist by Manuel J. Rodriguez, and letterer by Jim Campbell.
Excommunicated follows an ardently faithful nun and a festering demon who are excommunicated from the church—and from hell—because of a botched exorcism, and they must work together to uncover a sinister plot that endangers their lives and the world. In issue #1, our protagonist is summoned to assist in an exorcism, but when she arrives, it’s evident that her presence was not actually requested — setting up a fascinating mystery.
While obviously a work of fiction, Robinson expertly weaves in biblical knowledge and establishes a fantastic, deeply-woven mythology — one that will no doubt continue to be built upon in forthcoming issues. And serving as a stellar companion to his wide and fascinating vision is Palma’s jaw-dropping artwork and Rodriguez’s lush colouring. They offer breathtaking visuals, from demonic horrors and gore, which elevates the story to another level of good. This is particularly important, given that issue #1 is very art-heavy and fast-paced; it’s not a word-heavy debut.

Excommunicated #1 is a breathless and cinematic opening, throwing the reader in at the deep end with instant action and fast consequences, and setting up a difficult-to-solve mystery. This debut issue reminds me of Robert Kirkman’s Outcast — a brutal exorcism, fast-paced action, and a debut that leaves you begging for more.
After so many bestselling novels, a couple of which have already had brilliant comic book adaptations, Excommunicated is undoubtedly Robinson’s crowning comic book achievement so far. If you read one indie comic in May 2026, make it this one — you won’t be disappointed.
Excommunicated #1 goes on sale 5/6/2026 from Vault Comics.
