Long-time The Walking Dead director and executive producer Greg Nicotero says the team behind the franchise have been talking about a reunion show for “a couple of years.”
For many years, The Walking Dead was one of the most popular shows on television. And while the main show may have ended in 2022, the franchise continues to endure through a slate of spinoffs, notably The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Dead City. While these spinoffs chronicle the adventures of individual characters, they’re pretty self contained. Fans are still awaiting a show that feels like a complete reunion, bringing back together fan-favourite characters under the same story.
After Daryl Dixon ends, the only series still ongoing is Dead City. This puts the franchise in its most precarious state yet. There’s no other projects confirmed to be in development. Will The Walking Dead ultimately fizzle out? Or are there still more stories to explore?
While we’ve already had one reunion show in The Ones Who Live, it went in its own direction, following just Rick and Michonne as they took down the Civic Republic. For many viewers, the CRM story always felt like the endgame plot. But ultimately, it came and went quickly. Fans are still craving a reunion show.
In an interview with Brandon Davis, long-time Walking Dead director and executive producer Greg Nicotero weighed in on the possibility of returning for a requisite spinoff. “The CRM is gone, but there’s been a lot of talks about that reunion type show with a lot of the great characters.”
“I mean, we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years, even before the Rick and Michonne show, it was supposed to be a Walking Dead movie,” he explained. “The people wanted to see what happened to Rick. I think that was the great part about it was the excitement of seeing where Rick went and what happened. It was always intended that way. It was always intended that we follow Rick and we see where he goes.”
In addition, franchise overseer Scott Gimple has previously hinted that the spinoffs could converge at some point, essentially bringing back the main show. “The dream would be that these shows somehow converge in some way, narratively,” he said during New York Comic Con in 2023, per Comic Book. As for what would essentially be season 12, he added: “I’m not against it.”
Additionally, he’s also teased that the show’s characters could continue to be explored for another 15 years. “It’s quite possible we could see this group up here 15 years from now,” he told Variety on the show’s fifteenth anniversary. “There are many more continents to visit. It’s about how [the characters] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can take this. In a lot of ways, [the locations] give the story to us,” he said.
There’s clearly a demand for a Walking Dead reunion show, and many of the show’s team are keen on seeing it happen. For now we say, watch this space. In the meantime, The Walking Dead Universe returns later this year for Daryl Dixon Season 4 and Dead City Season 3. Which one are you most exited about? Tell us in the comments down below!
