The Invincible universe is expanding once again, and its latest addition Ella Mental makes her debut in Capes #7, a key character in the Invincible VS game.
The next instalment of Invincible Universe series Capes is a particularly landmark issue, as it introduces Ella Mental in a backup story. The character was created by Robert Kirkman for Invincible VS, a 3v3 fighting video game developed by Quarter Up and published by Skybound Games.
Ella Mental’s origin story is the first chapter of new backup stories by Invincible creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, alongside colorist Annalisa Leoni.
Who is Ella Mental? The backup story is set to offer fans a comprehensive origin for her character, but right now we know that she’s an African American superhero with the ability to control the elements—air, earth, fire, and water. So kind of like the Avatar of the Invincible Universe. Her super-suit is primarily green with gold adornments, and she sports a cape. In Invincible VS, she prominently finds conflict with Invincible himself, as well as Robot and Rex.

Outside of the Ella Mental backup story, Capes #7 continues the story from Benito Cereno (Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, Blood & Thunder) and Mark Englert (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), as Capes Inc. face their biggest mission yet. The new issue marks the beginning of an all-new story arc, picking up the threads of the original series.
The official synopsis for Capes #7 reads: ‘With Invincible off-planet fighting the Viltrumite War and the new Guardians of the Globe battling The Order, now’s the time for Capes, Inc to become the face of superpowered crime-fighting. But has Bolt already made the one mistake that could doom Capes?’
Capes #7 launches on May 27, 2026 in comic stores and online.
