For fans excited about Marvel’s upcoming Wolverine video game, we’ve got good news and bad news. The good? Yes, it is set within the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man. The bad? According to creative director Marcus Smith, there is no crossover.
Both Marvel’s Spider-Man and the forthcoming Marvel’s Wolverine are developed by Insomniac Games, a studio under PlayStation Studios. Because of this, many gamers assumed that there would be a crossover. And while there might be a couple of small crossovers on the periphery with it being a shared universe, creative director Marcus Smith has just confirmed that Spider-Man will not be making an appearance in Wolverine, The team up we’ve all been waiting for isn’t about to happen, at least not in the video game realm.
Known as Earth-1048, the video game universe kicked off in 2018 with Marvel’s Spider-Man, and continued with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023). A Marvel’s Wolverine game is currently in active development, and confirmed to be set within the same continuity as Spider-Man, although no character crossovers will happen. The Wolverine game will swap out Spider-Man’s heroic style with Wolverine’s signature gritty, visceral gameplay.
While most fans were already aware that there would be no crossover between the heroes in Marvel’s Wolverine, we recently got concrete confirmation from the game’s creative director Marcus Smith. “It’s correct that it does take place in the 1048 Marvel Universe, which is the Insomniac video game universe. It happens in the same world, but we don’t have any crossover. Spider-Man will not be making an appearance in Wolverine,” Smith told IGN.
In addition, game director Mike Daly told IGN that in Marvel’s Wolverine, you play only as the titular hero. It does not switch to other playable characters as the story progresses. For instance, in Spider-Man (2018), you frequently play as MJ and occasionally as Miles Morales. “This game is all about Wolverine and you play Wolverine the whole way through,” Daly confirmed. “We wanted to keep the focus on him throughout the whole story.”
The potential for future crossovers has not been dismissed. Earth-1048 is heavily narratively controlled, and the story is being built out steadily. There’s no confirmed projects for after Marvel’s Wolverine, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a team-up wasn’t planned for some point in the near-future.
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. Will you be picking it up? Tell us in the comments down below!
