A long time ago, far, far away in the Backrooms... or something like that. As bizarre as it sounds, acclaimed filmmaker Shawn Levy has set his sights on bringing the two together in some sort of mashup. “I’ll see what I can do.”
Helmed by 20-year-old YouTuber-turned-director Kane Parsons, the Backrooms movie is the hottest new horror picture of 2026. Taking inspiration from the internet mythology and perfectly capturing the eerie feeling of liminal space, the movie takes viewers into a creepy alternate dimension — endless stretch of rooms. It’s one of the most uneasy and disturbing movies of recent years; testiment to a remarkably strong big screen debut from Parsons. To date, the movie has already crossed over $130 million worldwide.
With the success of Backrooms, Hollywood’s biggest filmmakers are garnering interest in the franchise. Look no further than Shawn Levy, a director and producer whose résumé boasts some of the biggest sci-fi and fantasy projects of recent years — look no further than Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine. Levy is currently hard at work on Star Wars: Starfighter, an upcoming movie starring Ryan Gosling. And after he’s done working on that, he sees potential for a Star-Wars-Backrooms mashup. Whatever that may be, your guess is as good as ours.
“Well right now I’m making a movie called Star Wars: Starfighter, and so I very much have Star Wars on my mind,” he recently told Vanity Fair while stood on the red carpet. “I can’t help but be captivated by a ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Star Wars’ mashup. Luckily, I’ve got a little involvement in both, so I’ll see what I can do.”
So what could a Star Wars-meets-Backrooms mashup look like? Immediately, we’re looking at a special in a series like Star Wars: Visions, which is already well-regarded for telling unique and creative stories from across the galaxy. We’re visualising the sterile, samey corridors of the Death Star, which are well-suited to the Backrooms style. In Star Wars: Starfighter, Levy is forging out his own corner of the franchise. He’s got strong creative freedom. There’s so much scope for possibilities — and a Backrooms-style mashup or inspired plot line could be part of that.
Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theatres on May 28, 2027. Backrooms is out now.
