Joe Russo Reveals ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Re-Release With New ‘Doomsday’ Footage

Before Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters this December, Marvel Studios is bringing Avengers:Endgame back to the big screen with brand-new footage directly tied to the upcoming sequel.

Later this year, Avengers: Doomsday hits theatres, and it is poised to be one of the movie events of the year. The picture brings back many of our beloved original Avengers, such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and also brings back fan-favourite X-Men stars, such as Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Professor X (Patrick Steward). Add to that the Fantastic Four, and so many others, and it’s one of the biggest ensemble casts ever collected on the big screen. We’ve collected the full, confirmed cast list here. All of them are there battling Doctor Doom, played by none other than Robert Downey Jr.

Given that so many years have passed since the last Avengers movie in 2019, many viewers are in dire need of a catch-me-up. For those that fall into that category, Marvel Studios is re-releasing Avengers: Endgame on September 25. However, this isn’t just a standard re-release. Both Joe and Anthony Russo have re-worked the movie, adding in new material to bridge the gap for Doomsday. “It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame,” Joe Russo said at Sands Film Festival, per Deadline.

“It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way, and because the movie was so successful, we have an opportunity to re-release it,” he added. “You don’t always get the chance to re-release because it costs money, so the fact that we can enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story: It’s a really unique opportunity.”

The fact that the re-release will feature new footage makes it feel like a completely new Marvel event in and of itself. It could also push Endgame to re-gain its crown as the highest-grossing movie of all time, having lost out to a re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s unlikely that a re-release would bridge the $130+ million gap, but not impossible.

The Avengers: Endgame re-release arrives in theatres on September 25. Avengers: Doomsday opens on December 18. We’ll keep you posted on all the latest news and updates.
