After so much waiting and anticipation, Absolute Batman fully introduces the Joker into the fold in issue #15, and it was worth the wait.
If you read one DC series this year, make it Absolute Batman. From Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, the re-imagined Batman mythos is off-the-scale epic, dialling everything up to eleven. Issue #14 was perhaps the most epic yet, featuring the incredible final showdown between Batman and Bane. We loved it!

Issue #15 begins a new story arc, opening with Bruce Wayne being told everything there is to know about Jack Arthur, aka The Joker. This name is likely a nod to both Arthur Fleck and Jack Napier. His origin story is completely different to anything we’ve seen in the past. This is, of course, the Absolute Universe. In fact, his origin actually echoes the traditional story of Bruce Wayne. He’s a multi-billionaire business mogul. So in other words, it’s no longer Wayne Industries; it’s J.K. Holdings. He’s also a highly trained and skilled fighter.
Something I’ve loved about Absolute Batman from the very beginning is how Snyder utilities telling huge chunks of the story through the perspective of Alfred Pennyworth. This issue is no different, with Alfred recounting the story of the Joker from his beginning as a child, to how he ended up a serial killer. The backstory covers a lot of time, detailing some massive lore, yet it doesn’t feel overwhelming. We’re learning at the same time as Batman, and the twists (including the big twist) hits super hard.
The design of Joker has been much-discussed in recent months. Joker’s exterior appearance is businessman-like, but really, he’s a monstrous entity who needs blood transfusions to keep up his human facade. His core appearance is otherworldly with heavily bleached skin, bursting veins, and sharp teeth. I have absolutely no complaints about the design; the absurdness and grandness of it fits the Absolute Universe perfectly.
The artwork from guest artist Jock is stellar, which was expected. He brings the unique gritty darkness that we’ve come to expect from his work throughout the years.
Overall, Absolute Batman #15 is another exceptional entry into the series. This series is easily one of the finest Batman runs in recent years. With the dawn of an all-new Joker arc, these are very exciting times indeed.
