Vault Comics Announces ‘Darkest Dungeon’ Graphic Novels, Based on the Hit Video Games

Publisher Vault Comics will be the home of Darkest Dungeon graphic novels, based on the series of games of the same name developed by Red Hook Studios.
Red Hook Studios’ Darkest Dungeon is one of the most popular gothic, turn-based RPGs out there. Debuting in 2016 and co-created by Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman, the game sees players recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes against everything from disease and dark, to horrors unimaginable. The game has myriad acclaim, and it returned in 2023 with Darkest Dungeon II, which cemented the franchises status as a cornerstone of fantasy RPG gaming.
Now, Darkest Dungeon is getting comic book treatment, published by Vault Comics. The graphic novels will be written by John Lees (whom we did a massive, in-depth interview with earlier this year). Drawing the graphic novels is Maan House, who is known for Dark Souls (Titan Comics), based on the bestselling video game, along with other horror titles including The Cemeterians (Vault Comics).
Creator John Lees has an esteemed history of penning horror titles, from And Then Emily Was Gone, to The Nasty. His style is unique, and he knows how to deliver a chill in his horror tales. “The strongest horror comes from the unknown,” he exclusively told us back in February. “Once everything is out in the open, there’s nowhere to go from there. Your story can’t be all climax.” Suffice it to say, Lees will be bringing that style to Darkest Dungeon.
“I grew up reading comics. I learned to draw from studying the carefully crafted panels of the bronze age Batman books, and later, the exuberant splash pages of the Image Comics revolution. Darkest Dungeon was born of a deep love of this medium, and from day one, I’ve always dreamed of seeing it on the page. I couldn’t be more excited to work with the team at Vault to make this a reality – together, we’re going to do it right,” said Red Hook Studios co-founder Chris Bourassa. “This book will be a meaningful, canonical entry in the ongoing lore of Darkest Dungeon, offering long-time fans new and important insights while introducing new readers to the characters, tone, and world that made our games so successful.”
