Who is Dinosaurus? Explaining the Destructive New Character Coming to ‘Invincible’ Season 5

Prime Video has officially confirmed that Invincible is returning for Season 5, confirming a bigger role for Dinosaurus.

Prime Video’s animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s beloved superhero comic Invincible is one of the best genre shows available. Season 4 truly elevated the series to epic heights. Our review reaffirmed our belief that it’s the best superhero show in the universe — a sentiment both the show and comic have proudly proclaimed.

Given the immense success of Invincible, a renewal was never really in doubt. In fact, Prime Video has already confirmed that voice acting is complete. In a witty post confirming the news, they confirmed that “Thragg will be back,” and “Dinosaurus will be back,” but noted that Conquest will not return (as expected, he died for real in Season 4).

Who is Dinosaurus in Invincible?

Invincible comic readers will be very aware of Dinosaurus, as he plays a massive role in the later part of the story. He first appears in Invincible #68 (2009), going on to become one of the series’ most consistent characters. Dinosaurus made his debut in the TV adaptation in Season 4, being voiced by Matthew Rhys (The Americans and Perry Mason).

He enters the fray in Season 4 just as Mark is reeling from the Viltrumite War. Mark is mentally exhausted and pushed to his limit, and even threatens to execute the Dinosaurus in his human form rather than endure another drawn-out conflict. Take a look at his introduction below:

In his human form, Dinosaurus is scientist David Anders, a harmless human who suffers from a dissociative disorder. What does the disorder entail? Well, when he gets bored, he transforms into the hyper-intelligent, ridiculously powerful Dinosaurus. His prehistoric, anthropomorphic alter-ego is ruthless and ardent in his ways, not letting anything get in the way of his destructive beliefs; look no further than his ‘killing millions to save billions’ ideology.

“Matthew Rhys, who’s going to be playing both Dinosaurus and his alter ego, David, is absolutely spectacular,” Invincible creator Robert Kirkman said of Rhys’ voice performance as Dinosaurus (per ScreenRant). “In this dual role, he’s giving us two completely different sides to a character and vastly different performances, which is really impressive and really exciting.”

Naturally, both Dinosaurus and Invincible don’t view things the same way. They constantly clash over their differing methods. But also, there are times when they have to act as allies against common foes.

Overall, Dinosaurus’ introduction into the Invincible Universe shakes-up everything. He tests Invincible and his moral compass in a way other villains do not. He tries to break Mark’s conscience, presenting him with morally ambiguous choices. He’s incredibly strong and powerful, but it’s the mental side of it that challenges Mark the most.

‘Invincible’ returns for Season 5 in 2027.
