After The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4, the character’s future in the franchise is uncertain — but AMC are in active discussions with Norman Reedus to continue the journey.

AMC’s The Walking Dead has been a mainstay on our screens for over 15 years now, and Norman Reedus has been there from the start. He’s played fan-favorite Daryl Dixon throughout the entire run of the main show, and will return later this year for the fourth and final season of his spinoff The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

After The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon ends, the franchise finds itself in the most precarious position in its history. No further spinoffs are in the pipeline, and nothing has been announced. Of course, it’s unlikely to be the end of the line for the franchise. In fact, overseer Scott Gimple has teased all sorts of spinoff ideas. If one thing is for sure, The Walking Dead Universe will keep Daryl Dixon at the forefront for as long as possible. He won’t be exiting the picture anytime soon.

“We will always have Walking Dead shows on our platforms,” AMC’s Chief Content Officer Dan McDermott said in a recent interview with The Ankler. “We adore Norman and the Daryl Dixon character – he’s clearly a fan favorite, and people show up for him wherever he is. We are in active discussions with him right now about what we should and can do for the next iteration of a story in the Walking Dead Universe for Daryl Dixon.”

Of course, once Reedus filmed his final scenes as Daryl at the end of Daryl Dixon Season 4, the actor shared a heartfelt goodbye with fans. Additionally, in a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reedus explained that Daryl Dixon S4 wraps up his character’s saga in the “perfect” way, but went on to admit that it may not be the ultimate conclusion: “There’s always more story you can tell,” he teased.

It remains to be seen how Daryl’s journey will develop. Going into Daryl Dixon Season 4 later this year, he and Carol (Melissa McBride) remain in Spain after failing to return to the United States. We presume that Daryl and Carol will ultimately return home by the series finale.  We know that many of our favorite characters are still alive, including Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and so on. Does that then set up a big Walking Dead reunion? We’ll have to wait and see.

Before Daryl Dixon returns to our screens, we’ll first see The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, which premieres on June 18.
