Kevin Feige: ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Establishes a “Streamlined, Simplified, Single Universe”
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that, once the latest duo of Avengers movies wraps up with Secret Wars in 2027, the franchise ends up in the perfect position for a jumping-on point, having established a “streamlined” and “simplified” single universe.
It goes without saying that in recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a little too convoluted, branching out into the multiverse and bringing together multiple timelines into the single continuity. We’ve had crossovers galore, seeing our legacy X-Men characters enter the fray, to beloved Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their roles, and beyond.
It’s been a roller-coaster of a time for long-term Marvel fans. However, for some at least, it’s a bit of a mess and hard to follow. However, once Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have wrapped up, franchise overseer Kevin Feige believes that there will be enough of a refresh for newcomers for fans who lost their way to jump back on the Marvel train.
In a recent Q&A, Feige confirmed that Secret Wars marks the end of an era, and a clean, simplified continuity. “It will establish a streamlined, simplified, single universe that’s easier for audiences to follow,” he explained.
Of course, we’re talking about a franchise that began in 2008, and has roots and links to movies that happened many years earlier. “Some aspects will feel familiar,” Feige added. “But many, many things will be entirely new.”
In addition, Feige also explained the benefit of such an expansive franchise, and how he set out for the MCU to mirror how comics achieved succeeded with interconnected universes for decades prior. “With our first film, Iron Man, we started dreaming ‘this could happen,’ and we planted some clues in subsequent films, but what truly made us realize this was the huge success of The Avengers,” he explained. “That made us understand: global audiences really accept our interconnected narratives. Of course, this is what Marvel Comics has been doing for decades. My dream has always been to bring the comic book fan experience to the big screen. It was The Avengers that made us realize people really understood that.”
The MCU continues to build out and reinvent itself since the previous ensemble movie, Avengers: Endgame, in 2019 — a flick that soared to the top of the all-time global box office, defeated only by a re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar. The next movie, Avengers: Doomsday, releases in December, marking the return of myriad legacy heroes, and plenty of fresh faces marking their Avengers debuts.
