‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Leak — Everything the Team Has Said in Their Responses

Members of the animation team have responded to the “incredibly disrespectful” leak of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

After years of waiting and anticipation, the requisite Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is out later this year. The first production of Avatar Studios, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is directed by Lauren Montgomery. Original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are involved as executive producers. The all-star voice cast includes Eric Nam (Aang), Dionne Quan (Toph Beifong), Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), and Steven Yeun (Zuko). Dave Bautista will voice the film’s villain. It was all set up to be one of the biggest animated movies of the year. However, leakers have sadly gotten ahold of the film, and it’s being spread around the internet like wildfire.

Fans need only take one look at social media site X, where the entire film has been uploaded, in high quality, allowing everyone to watch it months before its October release date. This represents yet another major fumble and perhaps the most significant security breach in Paramount’s history. It isn’t the first time either; another notable leak happened with Scream VI (2023).

We’ve already implored fans that, tempting as it might be, it’s best to wait until the movie’s official debut to watch it. That way, everyone is supporting the writers and animators who worked tirelessly to bring put this movie together. It’s unfair to illegally stream a movie that should be a fan event. It’s not supporting the creators, and it’ll massive hinder the film’s performance on release, which will subsequently have a negative effect on any other Avatar Studios projects in the future. Of course, at this point, the damage feels done, but Paramount are trying to taper off the damage until The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender debuts in October.

Animators Respond to ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Leak

Following the leak, a few of the crew that on worked on the picture have responded to the news. “We worked on the aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on twitter like candy,” Julia Schoel wrote on X. “I don’t like seeing people use paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support paramount+.”

They added: “Pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”

In addition, Anna Gong wrote a similar response on X. “It feels pretty awful. the only reason the movie looks so good is because there was so much passion directed toward making a truly special moment for ATLA. please support the actual release as well so we can make more movies,” they said.

“Hi all, I worked on this film on a leadership capacity,” wrote Tessa Bright. “I understand that we all have opinions about what happened and what you decide to do is your personal choice. But it breaks my heart to see the way some fans are treating the hard-working artists who dedicated years of their lives to bring you the best possible work they can with this film. It’s perfectly reasonable for anyone who worked on this project to be frustrated at this situation. The amount of effort and dedication it took to make this film happen speaks for itself in the final product and I’m sure a lot of you will agree. And even if you disagree with us, I hope that you can find it in yourself to still be respectful. To the fans and industry folks who have spoken out for us, thank you, you’re a big reason it was all worth it.

“I worked on this film as an artist too,” Tom Barkel wrote. ‘So incredibly proud of it. I understand fans who engage in leaks once they’re out there, I get it. The issue is the release, the one we all worked towards for years, being neutered by both Paramount and the leakers. It could have been a moment for all fans, but the rug was pulled and now there is division on whether to watch or wait. To those who say: “who cares, the artists were paid.” The ugly truth is that by not supporting the official release you bite the hand that feeds someone else. This jeopordises future work for artists in an increasingly hostile industry. Don’t oversimplify please. That being said, the movie itself is a beautiful feat of art. So proud to be involved. If you engage with it and enjoy it then support it so there can be more art!”
