Prime Video’s ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Season 2: Release Date & Everything We Know

When does Prime Video’s animated series Batman: Caped Crusader return for season 2? And what can we expect from the new season? Here’s everything we know.

Batman is of fiction’s most beloved characters,  transcending the comics medium to become a staple in various media. Introduced in the late 1930s, he’s appeared in animated and live-action films, TV shows, games, novels and even audio dramas.  This presence means there’s a wealth of Batman stories to choose from.  For graphic novels, Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke are must-reads. His filmography includes classics like Batman (1989), Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed trilogy and The Batman (2022).  The original animated series and award-winning games further expand the Batman universe.

Amid the vast, almost labyrinthine, array of Batman stories out there, it can be hard to find out which ones are worth your time. But Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader is right up there with the best of Barman media in recent years. The 10-episode series is written by comics legend Ed Brubaker, and produced by Matt Reeves (The Batman), J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm (creator of Batman: The Animated Series). So from the outset, you know you’re in safe hands.

It sets the scene in 1940s Gotham, chronicling the earlier days of Bruce Wayne’s facade. Unlike other more modern Batman stories, which favour a contemporary setting, Caped Crusader relishes in the atmospheric, dark noir setting of its old-school Gotham. In taking place at this time, it harkens back to the roots of the hero; of course, the first Batman comics were written in the 1940s.

The titular character is voiced excellently by Hamish Linklater, who delivers some truly brooding voice work, although noticeably not quite as grizzly as other incarnations of the character. Linklater’s terrific performance comes as no real surprise. I mean, he’s the son of esteemed vocal coach Kristin Linklater, who mentored some of the world’s finest voice actors, including Sir Patrick Stewart.

When does Batman: Caped Crusader return for Season 2?

Batman: Caped Crusader was initially given a two-season order in March 2023, so it is officially returning for a second season. Additionally, Hamish Linklater confirmed in late 2025 that season 2 was actively being worked on, but could not cite a release date: “I don’t know when it’s coming back,” he told MovieWeb, adding: “Sometime next year, I think they’ll show it, but yeah, we’ve been working on it.”

While we know almost for certain that Batman: Caped Crusader will return for Season 2 in 2026, Prime Video has not yet confirmed a release date. Watch this space.

What can fans expect from Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2?

Caped Crusader takes Batman villains and changes them up; they still feel authentic, but unique enough to not feel samey. For instance, in episode 1, we learn that The Penguin is no longer Oswald Cobblepot. Now she’s Oswalda Cobblepot. It builds on other existing villains, featuring outstanding episodes with Clayface and the Gentleman Ghost.

Looking ahead to Season 2, the show will reimagine the Joker. Speaking to The Direct, co-showrunner James Tucker teased a ‘very different’ iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime. “I think it’ll be a new take on the Joker for people who only know of… If Joker begins with Mark Hamill and Jack Nicholson, this take on the Joker will be very different for them,” he said.

“For people who’ve read comics for a long, long, long, long time, it won’t be [surprising],” he added. “I think some people will recognize it and go, ‘Oh, I see what they’re doing.’ And other people will go, ‘Wow, this is different.’ But, I think it’s all Joker.”
